Funky Baby Blanket






Materials:

3 x 100g balls of self-striping 4ply (Moda Vera Noir or similar)

3mm needles

3mm circular needle (as long as possible)

First square

Cast on 75 stitches. (Using a knitted cast on will make it easier to pick up stitches later on.)

Row 1 (Wrong side) Slip first stitch knitwise, knit to last stitch, purl 1.

Row 2 Slip first stitch knitwise, knit 34 stitches, knit 2 together, knit 1, slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over. Knit 34 stitches. Purl 1.

Row 3 and subsequent wrong side rows repeat as for row 1.

Row 4 Slip first stitch knitwise, knit 33 st, k2tog, k1, sl1, psso, k33, p1.

Continue in pattern as set working one less stitch before and after the central stitches until 5 stitches remain. Work one wrong side row.

Next row: K2tog, k1, sl1, k1, psso.

Work wrong side row.

Next row: Sl1, k2tog, psso. 1 stitch remains.



All subsequent squares will be attached by picking up stitches. The final stitch becomes the first stitch of the new square.

Second square

With right side facing and remaining stitch in top left hand side pick up 37 stitches along the left hand side of the first square making sure the last stitch is right in the corner . Turn work (wrong side) and cast on 37 stitches using a knitted cast on (75 stitches). Work square as for first square beginning with row 1.

Third, Fourth and Fifth Squares

Work as for second square.



SECOND ROW OF SQUARES



With one stitch remaining you will begin working the next row of squares by picking up 37 stitches along the top of the last square knitted with right side facing(this will mean working from left to right and may be easier by using a crochet hook).

Row 1 Knit 38 stitches, turn work and cast on 37 stitches using a knitted cast on. Next row (wrong side) Slip first stitch knitwise, knit to last stitch, purl 1.

Work as for previous squares beginning with row 2.

Second square

With right side facing pick up 37 stitches along right hand side of square just knitted, making sure last stitch is right in the corner, continue along the top of the square in the row below picking up a further 37 stitches. (75 stitches)

Work as for previous squares beginning with row 2.

Third, Fourth and Fifth squares as for second square.



THIRD ROW OF SQUARES

First Square

With right side facing cast on 37 stitches using a knitted cast on. Knit the 38 stitches on the needle and then pick up 37 stitches along the top of the square just completed. Complete this square as set.

Subsequent squares are worked by picking up 37 stitches along the left hand side of the square just knitted, making sure that the last stitch is right in the corner and then continuing along the top of the square in the row picking up a further 37 stitches. (75 stitches altogether).

FOURTH ROW OF SQUARES

Knit as for second row.

FIFTH ROW OF SQUARES

Knit as for third row.

BORDER

Using a long circular needle pick up stitches evenly around the edge of the work marking each corner with a stitch marker. Continuing to work in garter stitch work a further 5 rows at each corner work a yarn over before and after the corner stitch every second row. Cast off.
